Kapruka responds to liquor racket allegations
It is with deep distress that we respond to the recent spate of baseless allegations leveled against Kapruka over an alleged liquor racket, supposedly being carried out by our organization.
With a history spanning over ten years, Kapruka has always been a company which adheres to the strictest of laws, regulation and ethics. At no point during our decade long existence has Kapruka willfully broken the law while carrying out its business operations and has always been mindful in ensuring it carries out its business within the stipulated laws of the country.
With the humblest of beginnings, yet backed by a visionary outlook, Kapruka was born in the year 2002 to be identified as Sri Lanka’s largest e-commerce organization in the country today.
Over the years, through our online gift delivery service, Kapruka has become a household name among many Sri Lankans who are living here and abroad.
Kapruka delivers over 10,000 varieties of different items ranging from cakes, chocolates, flowers, electronics, food items, perfumes, to even soft toys and liquor. At no point did we have a warehouse housing only liquor but when we get orders through our online patrons, we purchase the liquor from supermarkets wrap it and deliver it to the given address.
However as business increased over the years, there have been instances where we purchased a carton or two of liquor items from supermarkets and store it in our stores among our other gift items, so whenever a customer makes an online purchase then it’s easier for us to deliver it to the required address instead of going to supermarkets to purchase a bottle of liquor each time we get an online order for a bottle of wine, etc.
We stocked a considerable amount of various products including liquor bottles, which was purchased from supermarkets, for Father’s Day which fell on June 16th, however not all these products were sold out as anticipated and therefore these bottles continued to remain in our stores, awaiting future orders.
We agree that there was an oversight on our part with regard to obtaining the relevant permit as we had stored several bottles of liquor at a certain period. This was not an act committed willfully, but was an honest oversight. While we are regretful of this oversight, Kapruka categorically denies all baseless allegations which claimed that we were involved in a liquor racket.
There was no online liquor racket at any point during the operations of Kapruka, which has been in existence since 2002. We only purchased a product from a supermarket subsequent to an order we received via our website and delivered the order as instructed by our customer to the given address in Sri Lanka as a gift. At no point have we been directly importing liquor nor trading directly with liquor vendors.
This issue has now been solved through legal proceedings with the relevant authorities.
In conclusion, on behalf of Kapruka and my staff, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to all our customers and friends for the support extended to us at all times.

[Avril Isaacs] - Hooray for Kapruka...keep up the good work.
[Anton Fernando] - Getting a liquor licence as a company can't be a difficult process. So please get relevant license and resume it. They should encourage your business as it brings foreign income to country...thanks for good service for people living abroad.
[Lavanya Rajkobal Hettiarachchi] - As a person who had used the services of Kapruka over many years it indeed was sad to see this allegation. i'm not in a position to comment about this very incident but im truly grateful for the gift delivery services that Kapruka provides. it has helped me to bring a smile to my loved ones at the times that i couldnt be with them, when the distance mattered and when the surprises were needed, by allowing me to send my heartfelt wishes & feelings with a note, gifts and flowers. Kapruka not only helps to make relationships stronger but also to save almost broken relationships as ego doesnt really matter when there's someone else to deliver an apology note on your behalf... they dont just deliver commodities, they deliver feelings. it's an innovative & novel concept that Kapruka has come up with, with their online gift delivering. the team and the management is still quite young that they learn many things as they grow. though i personally dont agree linking father's day with liquor, i do not want to generalize it to their whole business which goes beyond mere selling liquor. i took this time as a mark of appreciation to a young Sri Lankan entrepreneur and as a note of gratitude for the well disciplined services Kapruka has given me when i wanted to say how i feel to me loved ones in a subtle way! All the best Kapruka!

[Shaveen Fernando] - I’m dead against Liquor. I’m not a customer of Kapruka either. But I’m an online strategist who eat & breathe online business.
Though I’m against liquor business, I’m blessing what Kapruka has been doing for the past 10+ years. They initiated the portal at a time when people were not much aware of Online Shopping (or not at all interested).
NO ONE, even any authority could not take the initiative to bare the risk of running an online shopping portal. Kapruka proved we, Sri Lankans are the best in Online Business. We support you Kapruka in your endeavors keep up the good work.
When something is online it is no secret. Any idiot should know if anyone wants to play a racket they will not go online. Do not care about people who do not value online business. They never realize that we are playing global and how important it is to set up proper online platform to this nation.
Dulith - suggestion, without liquor you can run a successful multimillion business. Continue the courageous work & be a blessing to Sri Lankans who value your business. Youth are with you.
[Gyan Fernando] - Kapruka! Keep up the good work. May you prosper and may the real crooks go down the drain!

The way they described it was totally different. please do get the necessary licenses and proceed your business so that no one can poke fingers at you. (even though i am against selling liquor). Selling liquor was not only your business. As someone who lives abroad I have used your services many times and so very satisfied with the service provided. Keep up our good work. Hope this is not a 'racket' against you, as these kind of allegations could be projected to disturb the business. Media organisations too should have little bit more responsibility before publishing or airing an news item. Especially, the new media or online media is very irresponsible at most of the time. Wish you very all the best to continue your good work.
[Kalana ජයසිංහ] - Probably someone wanted you to bribe them ;)

[Eranda Rajapaksha] - Keep up the good work. We have benefited from your valued service.
[Janaka Daivananda] - You have been framed my friends. B strong, they might come with another racket to coverup their failures. Anyway don't you think it's more profitable to ignore that 2% rather than going in to their rat traps.
[Jennifer Bastiansz] - I do agree you are the BEST
[Sujeewa Prasanna Vidanapathirana] - Nothing to worry, all of us know this is a baseless allegation. Kapruka has to go long way and treat this incident as another learning point in it's success journey. Wishing Kapruka and its management all the best ....
[Faider Junaideen] - I have worked with your company closely for quite some time and I have the highest regard for the manner in which your company carries out business. You should tie up any loose ends with regard to statutory requirements and carry on your business as usual. It is sad to see some media are trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill they should act responsibly not to create sensational news. All the best, your company has a bright future.

[Anil Kumarage] - Don't worry Kapruka. This is one stone thrown to you. Wait for more, but they can’t stop you. 10 years is not a long period. You have to grow many decades. Obvious fact is 98% good is not highlighted but 2% of mistake is highly highlighted.
Kapruka: Kapruka responds to liquor racket allegations
It is with deep distress that we respond to the - 50th Comments
[Samuel Daniel] - Ignorance of law is not an excuse,
its really funny that you guys say 1million worth of stocks are just oversight
[Radhika Andradi] - V live in srilanka people....wen they don't Hv things to c to they find small stuff....
[Frank Warnakula] - Nice note Dulith :)
[Mafaz Mohideen] - All these are done by haters. Keep up the good work Kapruka.
[Jagath Renuka] - Things behind this story may be a top one in the gov wanted to start a business like this. Recently Kapruka has started to deliver ebay, Amazon items. They may be wanted to finish the Kapruka business in order to start their one. Who knows.....
[Dhammika Ambalangoda] - http://www.ft.lk/2013/02/22/kapruka-coms-dulith-herath-bags-top-asia-pacific-young-entrepreneur-award/
[Ananda Ariyarathne] - Kapruka is an example for new thinking when it comes to maintaining social relations in a fast changing world where costs go up all the time while losing the ability to be in touch and be personal all the time.It is true that that all cannot trade alcoholic drinks without the required Government Licensing. This act looks more like a business jealousy than a genuine enforcement of law.How many saintly, white clad goons who pretend as if they are more Buddhist than Lord Buddha himself, more Christian than Jesus Christ and behave as the Pillars of Churches do more damage to our society than what has happened. After all, I am sure the items that could have been supplied were genuine products.Let Kapruka be responsible for the oversight or the error but that should not be used to destroy the good work done.Well that is my opinion.
[Bisthamy Sariffodeen] - hard work from your team bought a good name, but some people do not like to this this tree grow since they always have them in their blood. " Kapruka Team " we are with you.
[Daya Liyanagama] - we can understand the situation.Dont worry,go ahead.good luck
