- Al Franken: Just like in 2011 when we were faced with a potential government shutdown, I don’t believe it
Just like in 2011 when we were faced with a potential government shutdown, I don’t believe it’s fair that I should get a paycheck while hardworking Minnesotans are stuck at home, worried about paying their bills, watching as House Republicans hold our economy hostage.
So for each day the government remains shut down, I will be donating my salary to Second Harvest Heartland -- a great organization that works throughout Minnesota, providing vital assistance to families who would otherwise go hungry.
While the government is shut down, I believe giving my salary to charity is the right thing to do. And I will continue working as hard as I can to get the government up and running again.

[robin gregory kennedy] - This is why I voted for Al!
[eric toth] - They're just shutting down the non-essential functions.
Which clearly is the tea party coalition.
[rin kate watt] - That is awesome.
I look forward to voting for you for President some day, sir!
[karen logan demarini] - Thank you, Mr. Franken.
[dee doerr] - Thank you Mr. Al Franken
[kelly 'kay' graham] - You're a true Statesman, Mr Franken.
[jo klein] - I can always count on you to do the right thing. Kudos, Sen. Franken!
[sherrandy swift] - This is what a REAL AMERICAN looks like! Al Franken, I fucking love you!
[marlene reisman] - all of congress should follow your example Al!!!!
[jen bruber mays] - Thank you, Al. The ones really bearing the brunt of this don't get polled for their opinion when they go to bed hungry.
[keith lander] - Can we clone you and replace our "leaders" with your clones?
[michael john krieglstein] - It just makes sense.
[cynthia mavrick] - Love you Al! Keep up the good fight!
[ken chow] - Time to bring back the Al Franken Decade...
[justin mclean] - Good job Mr. Franken. Still surprised you got involved in politics in the first place though. You seem smarter than that. But having worked directly with Second Harvest... you're contributions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
[elizabeth truesdale] - I wish we had 535 of you in Congress.
[eric gustafson] - Al your the best and I dont even live in your state.. this is the right thing to do and other politicians should follow your example.
[charles spencer] - Thank you, Senator.
[roberta harosh] - Proud of you and proud to be a Minnesotan
[ron nye] - What do you think Boehner is doing with his money?!
[renee nielsen engebretson] - When I see the video and ignorance of Randy Neugebauer I fear this may never end as it doesn't seem to be an isolated incident.
[jeff young] - If Michele Bachmann were to do this, she'd run to a photo op with hungry families.
[kelli byrnes] - Love this status!
[deb whicher] - Al, you're awesome!
[kimberly roof-atkins] - To bad they can't all be like you!
[peggy stocke] - I wish ALL politicians thought like that!!!
[tracy rowan] - Al, you are a truly decent person.
[ed janison] - wish I could vote for him next election. He should do the stuart smalley character in his campaign ads.
[erich rothstein] - The right thing todo is to reject it.
[kersten richter] - Thank you for being one classy guy and STAND FIRM!
[bette westman] - Did you get my plea about School Lunch Funding?
[charles jackson] - Thanks Al, at least you realize your not worth the pay your getting.

[michael moore] - Right on! Senator!
[big-al navidi] - You Liberals are at fault just as much, so don't give me that !! You're all cut from the same darn fabric, so stop the blame game and do something!!
[john hagerman] - It's time the Republicans stopped driving the country from one crisis to the next. Politics used to be the art of compromise, now it's become the brutality of war. Enough!
[steve osterberg] - Would be great if all Congress did that!
[jean buchholtz] - And THAT is why I Voted for you ! You and Amy are both Class Acts !! Thank you for caring more about us than you do yourself <3
[barbara degrande] - Bravo! And thank you!!
[andrew gutshall] - That's a classy gesture, it's too bad not all of your colleagues share your character. Thanks sir.
[carl szulczynski] - Sharing this! Thank you for having a conscience which is so sorely lacking among your peers.
[mike speiser] - Check this out: facebook.com/congressionalresponsibilityamendment

[mary brekke] - Wish there were more like you!
[fay lind] - I absolutely love my Senators, Franken and Klobuchar. Thank you both for being honest and working for the people.
[anny ruygrok] - Dear US leaders. Yes this means the #Senators, #Congressmen, #President and of course the #media. Please take time to #understand each other's perspective without making each other wrong. Remember that when you point a finger at another you are pointing three back at yourself. Believe that everyone of you has the good will of all in your hearts. If you look for a way to create alignment and equanimity you will find it. PLEASE LOOK!!
Remember the wisdom of Albert #Einstein:
“Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.”
Please share this. Maybe someone will get the point.
[linda d. gibeau] - Thanks, Senator Franken... (I hope Joe's daycare isn't affected..."
[mark glenn] - Boehner is a Bonner....
[thomas lomsak] - Um need I remind you that not getting paid for this short time doesn't mean squat to rich politicians
[colleen crumbcake] - Mr Franken, you are the best!
[tod gemuese] - Excellent! Thanks for fighting the good fight, Al!
[george simpson] - This is what a leader looks like....
[philip stover] - I don't see republicans doing this!
[dawn lewis goldwood] - Good for you Mr. Franken!! Better than this Republican: http://www.forwardprogressives.com/house-republican-refuses-to-defer-pay-during-shutdown-says-i-need-my-paycheck/
[frank smathers] - The longer this mess continues - the crazier the Republicans will get. They are like cornered rats who have no way to escape from the trap they created for themselves.
[susan theismann] - I don't live in your state, but if I did I would vote for you and support you!
[steven noah seaholm] - While I agree with you, I think the slapping yourself on the back for it is a bit much.
[susan marie sullivan] - Saint Al Franken to you!
[chris simons] - Walking the walk.... Thanks!!
[sal pisani] - Thanks Al. I hope you will be Hillary's running mate in 2016, yiur no nonsense style is refreshing.
[hunter s. grouch] - Ivana U To Goaway
[gina yolanda hill] - I'm not from your State, but I commend you.
[nancy karol weinbaum] - Thank You Sir... You and Amy Klobuchar are the only ones working for US in MN and THE USA
[carmen weckwerth] - thank you and way to go , others must be selfish
[maury grimm] - I laud your efforts, but the real man thing to do would be to not accept a pay check all together. Your donation is a tax deduction, which I am sure you know, and that does not speak well to me, and a few (many) others.
[cheryl marie williams] - Thank you for having a heart!
[shannon lee-vorse] - It should be the law that no senator or representative take salary during a shutdown. Thank you, Al, for being proactive and having the sense to see that.
[ken proffitt thomas] - Hi Al. I am one of those workers. I appreciate it.
[kristy van den broeke] - Thank you, Mr. Franken!
[robin esperanza] - Certainly better than pretending to refuse pay like so many have done.
[gael solon] - that is how to do it, thank-you senator!!
[warren backer] - Super - half way there. Now do your part to end the shutdown.
[amy thorsell laite] - So full of it there all liars
[nancy sonney] - thank you Mr. Franken.. , skill, brains and humanity
[garry schindler] - Al. what about NO PAY FOR ALL CONGRESS UNTIL ITS FIXED. That is motivation! Tell the Republicans this B.S. in shutting down American so they can try and Blackmail congress to get what they want. 40%+ voters are Independent, so partisan issues are silly when its the minority!
[barbara jungbauer] - Al, you are an amazing man and I'll vote for you next time around.
[ken lockwood] - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbJg1Pf8UcE&feature=youtu.be
[mary jane tala] - Al, you are an honorable man.
[vicki meyers] - We need more like you in political office; one who truly serves the people. Kudos to you, Al!
[bill cox] - Thank you! You continue to make me proud of my vote for you.
[pat weinand] - Al, if dumbasses such as yourself would stop blowing smoke up our asses it would have not happened, i hope it stays closed!
[kim martine] - Can you move to my district?
[ryan stegeman] - House Speaker John Boehner must act like an adult and stand up to tantrum-throwing, infantile Republicans to call a vote on a clean budget resolution and end the GOP shutdown. For every person who signs the petition, CREDO will send Boehner a pacifier. Add your name now: http://act.credoaction.com/sign/boehner_pacifier/?sp_ref=12329930.4.772.e.3278.2
[lori buckley] - Donating your salary to Second Harvest is admirable. Getting an agreement made between the factions would be best. Please, do more then try.
[robin berss ross] - REALLY? Steven..I haven`t heard one fu--ing Republican do that.
[robert napoli] - Who Will Speak for Peace Now and the End of the Military industrial Complex Worldwide destroying Our Environment and Humankind.
[jason grantz] - Al, you are what I wish all politicians could be.
[jennifer newman mcfettridge] - Thank you, Al. I am proud to say I voted for you twice! You have not let me down yet and I truly appreciate all you do!
[robert forhan] - @Warren, he did his part, he gave the House the exact budget amount they asked for.
[ge stinson] - i am very proud of you, senator franken. you are the real deal.
[paulette koshenina] - Now, if you can just convince your collegues to do the same...
[amy bauer] - You are beyond like~able, sir! ;))
[drex mason] - How many baggers do you think will make this gesture? Absolutely zero I predict.
Al Franken: Just like in 2011 when we were faced with a potential government shutdown, I don’t believe it - 100th Comments
[bernie sampson] - Why not just return it to the treasury? That way everyone will benefit.
[kari crawford] - You are awesome.
[robert edwards] - I don't think its fair that you should ever get a paycheck that comes from my taxes.
[judith wallace buisman] - I think the entire Congress should donate their wages to a fund that will pay the bills of layed off workers.
[jeannie mueller] - Always a class act Al <3
[bradley wenner] - I didn't vote for you last time, but this, and much of the other work you have done during your term has impressed me. You have my support next time around sir.
[kevin j. mattakat] - of course your pal Keith Ellison is keeping his...
[mariam slayhi] - Thank you. You are respected.
[mona grinberg] - i think he not only has the right to be proud of this action, but also the responsibility to inform others of it......maybe so someone else might learn from it....and hopefully behave similarly.......!
[les clements] - they get full reimbursement for wages lost but NEVER make up the hours not worked, closing Military Cemeteries and the WWII memorial, an open air memorial, exposed the scam to anyone who can think "On Tuesday morning, seven National Park Service employees were seen erecting and tending to a barricade around the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. One NPS employee was operating a forklift. There usually aren't any NPS employees working at the World War II memorial."

[judi judge] - Thank you Mr. Franken..appreciate it..
[steve bennett] - We need politicians like you in the UK and you need in the USA more like you. The moral high ground is always a great place to be.
[linda rooney] - Don't listen to Charles Jackson! We are very proud to call you OUR Senator Al and you have my vote again.
[david william gordon] - because you're good enough, you're smart enough,m and dog gonnit, you kick ass Al! (y)
[gabriel craft] - #dailygoodnews #positive #inspirational
[mimi kennedy clark] - Al Franken, you are a true Leader and a real mensch!!!
[zach shaheen] - I love being a Minnesotan. Thank you for representing us Senator Franken!!
[linda teague pelphrey] - Many politicians are starting to do this now.
[elizabeth strong] - Thank you Senator Franken, we need more leaders in government like you.
[merlene smith] - Because you have humanity Al! Vote to stop the Tea Parties' pay checks!
[lisa jane dallenbach] - How generous of you.. Thinking of all these people should have stopped all of you from the govt shut down in the first place!!!!!!!
[julie olson] - Challenge others to give to charities, the right thing to do!
[bev stevens peterson] - Ken: Congress is not excluded. And your state probably "forces" you to have auto insurance - is that socialism or control? The ACA is all about private insurance companies. And the Supreme Court upheld the law, even the mandate.
[adolf kowalski] - al for president
[michael maxwell] - The republicans have the government hostage? Lol. Last I knew, the president could end this. He is the one who doesn't want to negotiate.
[jan richter neutz] - Love you Al! Glad I voted for you & definitely will in the future! Hoping we can get Right-wing extremists out of office next election & Congress can get back to getting things accomplished. SO frustrating for you & our President!
[michael wilk] - Al, it's obvious the GOP is hellbent on repealing Obamacare, so why not give them what they want and repeal it? Then you can replace it with actual health care reform: restoration and expansion of Medicare to every single American.
[elizabeth aleccia] - I'm drowning in a sea of facebook friends who are "Tea Party Patriots". Sometimes it gets lonely out here. Thanks for being there for us Senator.
[christopher bianco] - You have class, unlike a lot of your colleagues,
[debbie renard] - Thank you. Acts like this are about the only way I see any good coming out of this mess.
Even though I'm not from your district or even from your state, I feel that my views and priorities have representation through your work. This blue gal in a red state REALLY appreciates that!
[traci dorstad maynard] - Good for you!! You just restored some of my faith in the United States Govt.
[patty smith] - ...and that is why YOU are a GREAT Senator, Mr. Franken. Thank you!
[patricia mcdonald] - Thank you! Love you and Amy and proud that I voted for both of you.
[terry smith] - Thanks Al, now get in there and settle this.
[tom mcevoy] - Negotiate what? It's law.
[louise hamberg pace] - Good for you Al!
[sally silva] - Thank you - could we work to make this a law?
[kai joli sherman thogmartin] - Maury Grimm, it may be a deduction but that does not mean he will use it as such!
[becky haapala] - Mary Grimm - I get your point, but I would suggest the folks at the food banks are grateful for the funds. Money goes MUCH further than a donation of goods at food banks.
Good for you Al!
[steve goldstein] - You are a mensch Al.
[d'anna l beck-reed] - We r so blessed 2 have a great senator like u and Amy K. Thank u for working so hard for all of us:)
[amy lavalle hansmann] - @Ken Griffin - If you're going to begin a post with "Americans are not stupid," you may want to check your grammar before posting. Just a thought.
[deborah d. waddington] - I almost wish I lived in Minnesota so I could vote for you. I applaud your generous spirit.
[gwenn smith olson] - Ken, 'Obamacare' will drop my brother's insurance costs from $1700 to under $200/month. Congress' exclusion of their families from the ACA was a ploy, and their staff is now suffering and pissed. First, they ADDED their families and staff, in an attempt to derail it, and when THAT didn't work, they took them off in another fail attempt to derail it. Do your homework. It isn't that difficult.
[shethat isme] - I like you very much, Mr. Franken. But, with all due respect... I think that even though you are doing something kind with your pay, the fact that you and every other politician can give up their pay so easily only illustrates that most of them cannot possibly understand the damage and hardship that families face across America because of the shutdown. How can these people accurately represent us? How can they be public servants when they have special interest?. I'll believe their authenticity when their political position in government is their only income, and they're actually putting themselves in hardship to stand in solidarity with the women, children, families, and elderly who are not merely inconvenienced by this shut down, but actually in danger because of it. We don't need the rich to represent us, that's why we are where we are. We need average, good, smart people who understand what it means to live in middle America (and in poverty).
[dave casey] - None of you should should get a paycheck...ever. You are supposed to be public servants, not career politicians.
[doug palmer] - You realize, Al it was your unfunny "Me decade" that caused all this.
[carmel calsyn] - I wish I could vote for you. Of course, I always wish I could vote for you.
[patrick clark] - If I lived in your state, I'd be proud to have voted for you.
[keith patterson] - Thank you, Al. God bless!

[todd hagan] - Good work & keep up the fight!
[wendy ridgway] - Would love to see you in Santa Cruz again- your last appearance was awesome. You bright, witty, wonderful man!
[sandy mccall] - I'd say I wish you were my Senator, but I'm from New York, so really I wish you were Texas' Senator.
[jim brawski] - Free GMO for the less fortunate. Wonder how that plays out in the long run...
[david linck] - Right on, Al. Thanks!
[sharon l. halverson-soderberg] - Thank you. Wish more of our representatives would do the same. If they don't shame on them.
[kai joli sherman thogmartin] - Lori Buckley, We do not negotiate with terrorist and that is what the teathuglicans are being right now!
[patricia l. miller] - of course you will do that senator I wouldnt expect anything less of you.. proud to vote and support you !!luv ya hugs
[henry l jeter] - I do not care what they do what their salaries. I want progress. I want someone to remind the GOP they lost twice now. They are not speaking for majority. Merely a smaller minority. Democracy is about the majority rules not the Koch brothers.
[johanna fiecke jakubowski jensen] - Because I have lost all faith in polititians on both sides, I need proof that this isn't a lie like so many other so called promises.
[michael cano] - Maury I respectfully disagree if Mr franken were to just not accept his paycheck what good would that do? None. But I instead he is getting I and passing it forward to help those in need. That act even if its deductible still serves a purpose that refusing his paycheck wouldn't do. So shutup
[brian james] - You should be donating your salary, since you haven't earned it anyway.
[katie janes] - This is a politician that the people can stand behind. As long as we have people like you in office... we have hope <3
[mickey dean fisher] - How about YOU lead? Americans need somebody who isn't an idiot to speak up, even if they are in Minnesota.
[heidi morgenweck] - Sickning seeing this
[cheryl hietala overfors] - I think we all know it is not the president holding anyone hostage, it is the republicans and it is not a secret, even other republicans are sick of it!
[jonathan marshall] - Once again, Al is doing the right thing. Wish everyone there had as much integrity as you.
[ardis zimney] - This is commendable and should be what all the House members have to do until they start acting like adults.
[timmothy green] - the only probelm with that Al, is, ok cazy scenario but follow me. i disable the town's bus, then "save the day" by giving rides, to those i personally find worthy. i think your motives are pure, but it opens up the stage for grandstanding. PS the people you help may be too busy to remember to vote for you , due to frivilous concerns such as food and shelter, but the GOP will give to those who can give back in spades, both financially and voter support. doesn't seem fair to the system ( the american people as a whole)
[kathy gallagher] - thank you for being part of a solution and not a contributor:0
[noelle jacquet-morrison] - To Robert, Do you think it is fair for other menbers of Congress to collect their paychecks and use it to pay their bills, while we work. I rather have these monies to be used for the commun good! So where should the money to pay congress should come from? At least AL franken and others are trying to make a gesture! Appreciate!!!!
[nita wolf] - Good for you! I posted your message.
[lyn shahan] - you are doing a good and noble thing.....thank you :)
[kevin hillman] - Hey, that's great. Now what are you doing about the government forcing me to pay for healthcare? I didn't know it was their business to tell me what I have to spend my money on!
[john posada] - Maury...im sure the non-profit getting the money will appreciate it more than his tax advisor. My rough math makes that 346,000 per day to charities if they all did it. Isnt putting that in their hands a good thing?
[pam west bergeson] - Good for you. Thank you.
[margaret trembath] - Thank You!! Why are there not more like this?? May be if we keep passing this around, we can shame our government to do the same...
[beverly k. yoki] - Everyone should forget party lines and start working for the good of the people of this use-to-be great country! Also, salaries should be earned only while in office, you all should be on the same social security system we are, and same health care coverage. Maybe then we'd see some work being done!
[spencer ferrier] - @ Maury Grimm; he can't not accept it AND give his salary to charity. Sure it's a tax deduction, but so is being a Senator.
@ Pat Weinand; keep it shut down? And go into default on our debts? You right-wingnuts really ARE impressed with the Somali model of governance, aren't you? Because that's where we will be in short order if we destabalize the global economy by defaulting.
[jolene smit corey] - Makes me proud to live in Minnesota. Please give Mike Lee of Utah some lessons on good citizenship.
[anne-marie hoskinson] - Class act, Senator Franken.
[lucy bonnington] - You're one of my heroes, Al.
[jim shapiro] - Well down, Al. But what was up with your support for bombing Syria? Aipac talking? :-)
[sandy paul boe] - You never surprise me Senator Franken, you are a great politician, and a wonderful human being. You have never disappointed me! Bless you!
[linda putnam] - The ACA law is wonderful for the American people. It is not about control. We need to get health care without the greedy insurance companies taking most of the benefits. Not socialism. Just common sense.
[elaine hiller] - How about WE sequester Congress UNTIL they get their job done. Don't that sound like a PLAN...
[linda stocker] - you are the best--thank you--hopefully some of the others will follow suit
[john tiffin] - need to donate Boehner to something... The moon maybe?
[ron hall] - I wish I could vote for you, but I live in California .
[applesauce anne zee] - Thank you for being someone who "gets it"... !
[amby duncan-carr] - For most "representatives" the salary is nothing compared to the contributions of the lobbyists. THEY are, unfortunately, effectively running the government from behind the scenes funded by pay-offs from huge corporate interests.
[jennifer smith] - How about donating half to The Dwelling Place Shelter to help our teens being murdered by teen domestic violence. I see murders still from this epidemic yet you have been on the platform of The Violence Against Women Act, they need as much help to stay alive as any. Remember Anna Lynn Hurd, Kira Trevino, Mandy Matula... Many others. What are your plans for this? Families are being debased by this also, help not talk
[jonathan s. berck] - No wonder I've been a fan of Al's since ca. 1975!
[jakki snyder] - WTG Al........I have been working for the airlines for many years - I have suffered the BS they claim is going on that they need to file bankruptcy ...... I have suffered layoff's and cut in pays. SHOW US ALL THE REAL FINANCIAL BOOKS! We as Americans have been paying our due - how many of the people that represent us have had to live on Ramen Noodles!
[christopher bahlman] - Thanks Al. Even though I relocated back to my home state of Michigan a few years ago, I will continue to support your campaign.
[rebecca anderson] - Proud to have you represent us and thankful you have the decency to put your money where mouths need it.
[scott wahlin] - Maybe you could do stand up comedy on the senate floor for 21 hours for donations. C-SPAN would dominate the airwaves!
[suzzanne harwood] - I am an FMCS certified mediator --- maybe you need me down in DC!
[richard okon] - A real Mench, thank you.
[sue remus] - Thanks for seeing the big picture!!

[steve milosic] - Good ,man ! Franken !
[mark driver] - proud that you are my Senator.
[janet bowman] - The first person to voluntarily give up their salary was a REPUBLICAN! Nice try Al, I'm not impressed!
[fereshteh dehkordi] - Quite admirable. Hope other members follow suites to understand the working families pain and worries while our politicians act as juveniles.
[michael cano] - You know I don't even blame the Republicans as much as I blame the senseless tea party. Then I blame the Republicans for being so afraid of the 20 or so tea party idiots who are holding them hostage.
[donna brisendine-mcdowell] - This is a great example to our gov.!
[kathleen meyer henne] - We all love ya! Your real.
[joanne reed] - I always knew you'd be a great example for others to follow!
[terry g ridgway] - Al Franken for President 2106. :)
[craig prose] - My compliments - and my vote - to Al. Is anyone ele in congress as committed and creative as Al?
[mary bacharach] - I am very proud to have this man as Senator to my home state.
[tammy adams ninnemann] - Thank's Al! You are doing the right thing.
[coral cadman] - Senator Al Franken, you forever rock in ALL the right ways! Thanks for demonstrating REAL leadership in the face of this shutdown insanity known as "congress". I recently rewatched "Stuart Saves His Family" and cried from recognizing many of the themes from my own upbringing, and screamed with laughter and genuine heartfelt amazement at your insights, humor and compassion. One of the best "recovery" mirrors of all time! <3 your brain AND heart! Keep up the good fight! ;-)
[ramonia gee] - the man said he was donating his check already peoplke stop being so damn greedy.. and selfish . damn,
[linda koci johnson] - Thank you! I am so happy we supported you!
[wanda terry-olsen] - You are awesome!!
[karen driessen] - Those who pay for their health care also have to pay for those who choose not to. It is important for all to be responsible for their care. We all require health care at some point in our lives.
