- Governor Jan Brewer: On behalf of the people of the State of Arizona, and especially the citizens in and around Yarn
On behalf of the people of the State of Arizona, and especially the citizens in and around Yarnell, Peeples Valley and Prescott, thank you for your support and prayers so together we can begin our healing.
Today, we came together to honor and mourn 19 brave men. They were protectors defending our communities, safeguarding friends, family and strangers alike.
They were 19 heroes … gone at the turn of the wind.
To the families who lost husbands and fathers, brothers and sons: We cannot truly know your grief. But they are in our thoughts and prayers, and always will be.
Of course, our hearts are filled with profound sadness today. But, they are also filled with great pride.
How wonderful it is to know that Arizona was home to 19 men like those we honored today.
While not all of the 19 men were from Arizona … we claim every one as our own.
These men aspired to be wildland firefighters and endured the training and had the discipline to EARN that title. Indeed, they were men who carried out their duties with honor worthy of the name: Granite Mountain Hotshots.
While we grieve and mourn the tragic loss of these great men, and do our best to console their beautiful families, we cannot despair.
God teaches us not to despair, but to have hope.
1 Peter 5:10 says: “the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”
The brave 19 are now in the gentle embrace of God and they continue to protect us.
I am filled with hope that comes with seeing the way Arizona and the communities of Peeples Valley, Yarnell and Prescott have come TOGETHER in the wake of this tragedy.
It is hope borne of firefighters from all over the country pouring into this region to battle the Yarnell Hill Fire.
I have hope because Arizonans, of course, have responded like I knew they would; with candlelight vigils and prayers, with generous financial contributions, with flowers and notes placed gently at makeshift memorials.
This is the Arizona I know.
The hope I have in my heart is fortified by knowing that Americans all across this country have prayed for the brave 19 we lost and their families and have sought to provide resources to this community.
To America, I say thank you.
With God’s Grace and with time, we will recover.
To the Yarnell 19, we will never forget your sacrifice – and that of your families.
It is our duty now to help and protect their families.
May God bless and watch over them.
May God bless and protect the many firefighters and first responders who serve so courageously every day.
And, may God bless the great state of Arizona and her people.

[misty linden hausmann] - We here in California are in mourning with you! So tragic. Our hearts ache for you and their families
[marisa dawson] - Beautifully stated!
[elizabeth pezzuolo] - your state and it's people have been the most brave and giving people in all the 48, even though you have been the most unfairly treated by our government and nature you stick together and will not be defeated. God has to reward people like you and I think besided being an example for the rest of us you will go down in history as the savers of the country.
[debbie cahorshak] - Not to take anything away from these 19 men, but everyone is forgetting there were 20 men there. The one who survived is going to have to live with this the rest of his life and he is no less a hero than those who lost their lives. God bless our 19 angels and our 20 heroes!
[gail a. driscoll] - I attended a small town July 4th parade in Cascade, ID and during this parade they had the usual fire trucks but they also had one truck that had the helmet and boots on the hood. They then announced that we would have a moment of silence for these 19 brave young men and there was not a sound to be heard. So heart warming to be part of small town America where we can honor our brave heros.
[brian tiffany] - Governor Brewer. I am seriously considering retirement to Arizona due to in large part you and Sheriff Joe and the brave stand you are taking against the Federal Government and how they are trying to impede you in every attempt you make to try to protect the residents of your state. I applaud you, and I am proud of you. You are both doing what the citizens of Arizona have elected you to do and you do not back down. Keep up the great work.
[natalie malone orlando] - I live in prescott and it has been a very emotional week and have seen the outpouring love and support. I am proud. And Governor thank you for your classy speach. It was more meaningful than what our VP could provide.
[jay mcneilly] - @Holly Gorman- you're a disgusting idiot and a disgrace to humanity...
[carolyn findley] - Governor Jan Brewer I pray for God's healing to wash over your land and people and bring joy back to His people. We need more public officials like you.
[fred campbell] - Wonderful to see Arizona Governor Brewer as a God fearing leader in this time of grieving.
[debbie koops uptain] - Thank you for your words of comfort to the families today, your words on Facebook and for taking the time to call and speak with each persons family. I am so thankful for a Governor who isn't ashamed of her faith and is willing to share it and also is willing to to give a word in due season. We pray for you often. Thank you!
[stella cooke] - Thank you Governor. I would like to suggest we have a monument in bronze place in the area where those hero lost their lives. So, anyone who goes in that area will say a prayer for years to come and always remember what all safety personnel do for us. Thank you
[wes edwards] - Just returned to Long Beach from the Memorial in Prescott. The entire community should be congratulated - the ceremony was so wondeful as a tribute to the young men, their families, and their town. I will share as much as I can with my two firefighter sons. A day for the ages. And a big thanks to WFF..they are magnificent.
[kandy lynn] - Those of you that are bashing the governor ..., I really don't think you have a leg to stand on compared to her!!!!! I'm sure if you were up for the challenge you would of failed miserably ... This is why she is the Governor and not you!!! You should be great full and not be pathetic with what you say. This was and will always be for the awesome 19 that died and for the one who lives on to always remember that moment that he radioed and I must go and you must go too!!!! Don't pathetic at at time when we need to uplift those around us.
[david sanchez] - Prayers from NY and kudos to Az for electing an amazing Gov. Powerful words.
[william mcbrayer] - I know this isn't the time or place to bring this up, but it's bugging me. That's not the Roman numeral for 19. Should be XIX.
[donna harrier] - Governor Brewer: I am a transplant to Arizona from Michigan, but today I mourned as if I had been born and raised in our great state. I was extremely moved when the lone survivor gave the "Hotshot" prayer. It was also beautiful to note that he was also remembered. Thank you again, for being our "rock" during our grieving.
[rebecca eggen] - Governor Brewer, I love you and what you stand for! Thank God for you and the way you stand up for Arizona!!!
[gladysmae gunter-norris] - that was beautifully said and proud to hear someone not ashamed of God's Word in a time when so many are afraid to speak out and acknowledge Jesus Christ.

[sheila hanson larson] - Arizona has their %$#@ together! Might have to move there sometime! God Bless Arizona!
[david c brewerton] - Thank You Governor for your healing words. You are truly the "Leader" that Arizona needs.

[lori peters] - This is truly heartbreaking. Many more people here in Colorado would have lost our homes and possibly our lives had it not been for the firefighters.
[ryan addison] - We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know suffering produces perseverance, character and hope!
[mike graham] - May God bless them all.
[richie mazzochi] - Thank you for being there today. This is why you are the best governor in the US. Compassionate and extremely caring for all the citizens of this state.
[charlotte elizabeth lamm] - God, please protect and bless their families. Change hearts of so many in America who are apathetic and give hem love and admiration for our country and those brave souls who protect us. Use this terrible tragedy to change hearts. I mourn their deaths and the families left behind. <3
