[Michael Chaplick] - ... was it really charged ?!
[Christy Folkerts] - Welcome to the U.S.! That's shameful!
[Jen McNerney] - This is horrible!
[Greg Tierney] - Only in America...
[Matt 'Tank' Metzger] - guess they are letting anyone in there these days...
[Jim Strong] - I would have done it for a lot less.He or she got way overcharged.
[Stuart Poms] - dam, that's terrible
[Austin Gordon Braithwaite] - sound about right. taxi rides these days can get expensive.
[Joe Babcock] - It is horrible that someone would charge him that much, but even more horrible that the person doesn't know the value of money before arriving. How can that person be in college????!!! Dumb.
[Joe Babcock] - He should have looked for a different ride, obviously.
[Ashley Campbell] - Could of bought his own damn car for that price!
[Joseph Parrella] - Welcome to Chicago.
[Margaret Spoo] - what is wrong with people today.
[Megan Baker] - Did they like... Get in a cab at O'Hare and be like, take me to the U of I please?
Because... The U of I is 155 miles away...
[Lori Gayne] - Sadly, the guy isn't American...
[Randi Hofmann] - I guess the guy knew nothing about trains?
[Leticia Nunez] - That is SO wrong.
[Daniel Palmer] - welcome to america....
[Katherine 'Walker' Haan] - Well.... Student should have contacted his international office to find out the best transportation options ahead of time. Sigh.
[Mark Buban] - It must have been meter and a half!
[Ryan Nelson] - U gotta be stupid to pay that anyway I don't care if u just got here
[Nicey Webb] - So sad...when folks take advantage of the innocent!!! smdh
[Gitta Marie] - He should have had the exchange rate or purchased a book on it before handing over that much money, did he speak any English at all!!! Don't the cabbies call in each pick up from the Airport? I'm sure they will find this jerk..
[Chrissy Ham] - Was he trying to get to UofIC?
[Jase Buggle] - I take it the student isn't a math major?
[Barb Fennessy] - That's horrible. Wonder what the airfare was.
[Cassandra Stuart Sanchez] - Poor thing! It's disgusting that there are so many parasites out there just waiting to take advantage of someone.
[Michael Chaplick] - ... I'm going to bet whoever "charged" him, is in America on a work visa...
[Kira Gentry] - That's ridiculous. I'm ashamed that that's the welcome this student received when he reached USA.
[Trevinos Gamefowl] - dude shoulda known.that was alotta money nd called another cab
[Maria Davis] - who carries that much loot around in there pocket..
[Megan Baker] - Seriously... U OF I IS 155 MILES AWAY FROM O'HARE!!! That's a 6 hour round trip for a cabbie guys. If he got in a cab to take him there.. I'm sorry but its kind of his fault.
[Cassandra Stuart Sanchez] - Why would that be your guess, Michael Chaplick?
[Jim Esch] - Thats a pretty far drive for a taxi lol
[Kelly Mackalica Ray] - Shame on the University for not arranging transportation for their International students. Boo!
[Mike Scales] - How did someone this clueless make it all the way to college?
[Samantha Carl] - Akin to the college elevator key prank. If the U of I student was so smart to get into the college, they should have known about trains and the value of a dollar. Both people are culpable in this folly.
[Nick Kosmas] - Better then getting shot I guess
[Brent Westphal] - Talk about a sandpaper hand job.
[Angela Monroe] - Fools- both of them !
[Joe Albergo] - What a way to make an honest living... NOT
[Anthony J Hernandez] - I was charged $1985.65 by a cab driver for a $6.00 cab ride, and the police couldnt do anything and neither did Yellowcab. However chase returned the money because of fraud.
[Michael Chaplick] - Because most taxi drivers are!
[Mary Anne Duby] - What a great way to introduce someone to America and the University!!!!! I hope they find this person, fire them and charge them with theft!,, It is disgusting to take such an advantage of someone, any one!!!!! Shame on them!
[Danny Garcia] - The University shoud refund his dumb ass consider it a freebee
[Wendy Elliot] - This makes no sense.
[Mike Galgano] - Shoulda coulda woulda doesn't help the poor student now.
[Mary Lou Deane-Toolan] - That cabbie should have his license taken away!!!!!!!
[Zonia Guzman] - I would have done it for $2000 ;)
[Trudy Jahnke] - find them and get it back for the kid
NBC Chicago: Police say someone charged a new University of Illinois student, who had just arrived in Chicag - 50th Comments
[Chris Zavala] - Welcome to America smh
[Alexandria Youngquist] - Why would someone intelligent enough to be able to attend U of I not know.... But that is a long trip... not worth 4grand
[Robin McNaughton] - Find that cabbie and arrest him for extortion!!! And get back the kids money. Not to be racist..but it was probably some ass from another country that screwed this college kid.
[Paul Czosek] - U of I is 90% Chinese!
[Kevin Friduss] - I don't even feel bad for the kid - what an idiot
[Kevin Vance] - That's just the beginning.. Wait until our government gets ahold of him.. They'll tear him a new hole and call it taxes
[Bob Werneth] - The best is it got 30 likes!
[Michael Bellino] - Welcome to America ...
[Dawn M. Jackson-Davenport] - that's just awful..I hope they catch that person ....
[Kevin Stier] - Go back to china cause you a dumbbbasssss lol
[Matt Macpherson] - Should have gotten out of the car and ran like hell
[Ed Pappas] - i hope he got 1st class
[Mike Dim] - Sounds about right...
[Chris Lynd] - Seems like just the kid to need a college education.
[Pamela Rybowiak] - Uh, Amtrak...$39.00
[Cindy Patterson-Malinowski] - I keep reading " if he was smart enough to get into U of I Champaign. Urbana campus". Hey isn't that the party school. Was never a difficult school to get in, as for the fee charged, well if it was a cab driver, he's a crook. But obviously smarter than this college bound student!
[Danny Gopinez] - It might of been a police officer acting as a cab driver
[Erica Lauer Cohen] - He got into U of I ?
[James Venters] - gotta pay back that debt to China somehow....one student at a time
[Rustam Gorelov] - There are signs all over O'Hare warning not to take rides from the people offering it, they also say it on the intercom every few minutes. That is just dumb to pay that much for a ride or even $1000 that he agreed to.
[Lyle Miller] - That driver should feel like crap...but you know he doesn't. There's no way I would do that to a kid from another country. Can you imagine being 18 in China and giving up all your bread in a cab? Yeah...me either. :-(
[Michael Brown] - Chinese take advantage of us everyday
[Jonathan Hartmann] - He can probably afford it. Illinois is just mad they didn't get taxes on it.
[Kyle Krause] - Everyone is saying "welcome to America", well 9 out if 10 times I take a cab, it's not an American driver!!!
[Keith Almady] - I hope he enrolled in Common Sense 101!
[Helen MacMillan] - Why wasn't a ride prearranged for him?
[Rosalinda Alicea] - I don't believe this story. A ride from O'Hare to U of I . $ 4000??? This is gotta be a joke!!
[Gerry Malis] - You're telling me the ride ISN'T $4000? Really?
[Barbara Fosle] - Everyone of you for making a smart remark shame on you! If that was your kid overseas and not familiar with the country then someone would charge him $4000 you would be bouncing off the wall trying to get the money back. Better yet if you travel to different countries somebody does it to you how would you feel?
[Gerry Malis] - And who carries around 4 grand in cash?
[Mubarak Chi Malik] - Joseph R. Helbing hahahha
[Pedro Pelaez] - This kid is a total dumbass. No sympathy for him.
[Gerry Malis] - If he's a college student, he's not that smart.
[Ken Baldree] - The University should revoke their admission based on their stupidity!
[Gerry Malis] - Strangely, this has all the makings of an internet urban legend story. I really find it difficult to believe the truth in this story.
[Richard Morava] - 154 miles ONE WAY... 2:30 minutes ONE WAY... I image a trip like that would be expensive. The cab isn't licensed to pick up fares in Urbana so an empty cab making no money on the 2:30 trip back.
[John Morcelli] - Free enterprise!!
[Linda Findlay Love] - Why would he think that it was a good idea to take a taxi in the first place! Didn't he have a map and see that it wasn't a "taxi" good drive? No sympathy. He/she deserves the charge.
[Travis Flegel] - I'm sorry but common sense works the same in any foreign as it does here. It sucks this kid got taken lesson learned!
[John Morcelli] - Rots a ruck in getting the money back!
[Cindy Patterson-Malinowski] - Honestly, I have been in another country and have been taken advantage of monetarily, and no my parents weren't screaming and trying to get the money back... It's called the school of hard knocks. You enter someplace with blind trust you have set yourself up to be taken advantage of. Lesson learned on my end. Never happened to me again.
[David Long] - Are we SURE this student belongs at U of I??????
[Diana Stites] - Could afford it or he would have researched better transportation alternatives. Visiting the state of Illinois and Chicago isn't that difficult to research, even in a foreign language.
[Robert Radulski] - No tip? Thats not cool.
[Lisa Lea] - From O'Hare to Champaign was gonna be a pretty penny with the cost of a taxi ride anyway. But $4, 000? Yikes!
[Bianca Chavez] - That's not cool.
[Tameka Demetria Harris] - Personally, the kid was taken advantage ot. I am willing to be that it does not cost $4,000 to ride from O'Hare Airport to Urbana, IL. I bet it doesn't.
[Suzy Edwards] - somebody obviously alerted police AFTER the fact, why didn't he refuse to pay and let the cabbie call the cops on him, no cop in their right mind is going to make him pay that, and if that is all the money you have in a foreign country why would you give it all for a cab ride. Foreign or not that's just stupid.
[Brent Gust] - This student should have known better if he was enrolling into college... Learn or goggle common sense next time!
[Ashley Menig] - I got into a cab at o'hare once and asked the driver how much to palatine and he told me $100, I was like no way!! Apparently they are allowed to change different fares depending on weather they primarily service Chicago city limits or suburbs. Buyer be ware!!

[Jeff Lewis] - also left his cell phone behind. what a kick in the groin.
[Daryl Bureski] - How much would he have
paid for a private jet?
[Jeff Pabst] - Damned taxi drivers. Most of it is that Chicago tax.
[Allen S Feldgreber] - Its only 18 dollars by train
[Stephanie Starkey] - My question is... How did this kid ever get in to the U of I? Takes more than book smarts my friend.
[Thomas Surman] - How much did they tip?
[Jessica Ponce] - That's ridiculous!
[John Morcelli] - They said this student was enrolled in finance courses!! Lol
[Milosh Kosanovich] - What the story doesn't say is the kid wanted to stop at every Wal-Mart along the way to admire his craftsmanship.
[Rozalia Malyszko] - Well... Maybe he was threatened by the taxi cab driver, thats why he paid everything plus cell...?!?!?!?
[Mike McCarthy] - The real crime is how much taxes the cab driver will have to pay on that $ 4000.00
[Sam Leakakos] - it's about time someone made some money !!! BRAVO !!!
[Mike McCarthy] - Mega bus is like $10.00
[Carl Dorsey] - Those people believe That everything here costs a fortune...The Limo Hustler's Know this...The Limo Driver Should Be Arrested Cause He Was A Part In The Scam For Sure....O'hare Airport is a SesPool of Such Over Charging.
[Jay Burnette] - Good for the cab welcome to Chicago
[Michael Fabian] - lol - I would have charged him half that - next time call me!
[Scott Philbin] - Gotta love Chicago
[Michael Fabian] - did he get the plate number??????
[Dianna Joy Gigler] - Shame on cab driver ....shame ,shame!
[Sharon Anderlik] - And He paid it? That's a lot of cash on hand. Did he tip the cabby?
[Brent Gust] - Just wait until he has to pay his tuition bill... He was way overcharged but is definitely lacking common sense... Can't learn everything from a book!
[Willie Eastland] - people love taking advantage of folks
[Jim Sobecki] - sucker born every min
[Courtney Granger] - What the hell is wrong with people? Taking advantage of innocent people is wrong on so many levels! It's this kind of debauchery that gives Chicago a bad name...
[Tanya Kreeft-Bowser] - Welcome to Chicago!!! It's despicable!
[Nick Mousikofilos] - Hope he got a receipt
[Mike Small] - Welcome to Merica!!!!!
[Martie Mancuso] - Street smart versus book smart.
[Joe Castillon] - That's crazy! I would've only charged $3000!
[Antonio Cruz] - I feel sorry for the student , but at the same time I think ,what was the student thinking?- if a cab ride is 4000 ,he must be telling himself , I'm going to need more yen. America very expensive..
Wonder what he was will to pay for a BigMac ....
[Carlos Randolph] - Glad to see that UofI is keeping its standards high when excepting only the brightest applicants.
[John Venckus] - There illegal cabs, they use there own vehicles
[Greg Bork] - cab driver is just a common thief like Jackson jr.
[Fefe Monroe] - And his dumb ass payed for it?
[John Venckus] - Illegal cabs are also stationed at the greyhound station
[Ruthanne Mengel] - This is where Karma is a good deal.
[Marsha Dunlap] - Not amusing for a NEW STUDENT to the country. The kid was only about 18 years old. Guess he was lucky to make it to the resident hall at Champaign Campus with out any other harm outside his money.
[Mat Führer] - The people that are commenting things like sucks to be him are horrible, learn some compassion this story is disgusting but what is more disgusting are some of these comments.
[Jack Walczak] - I hope he is not studying economics!!
[Jack Walczak] - Welcome to America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[Darlene Henderson] - Being the mom of a college Fresman, makes me angry/afraid, that there are creeps in the world like that just waiting to prey on our kids!!!
[Jack Walczak] - Probably an Obaaama phone owner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[John Morcelli] - Was the taxi a Rickshaw??
[Claudia Hicks] - Low life!! I hope they catch whoever did this!
[Mary Ellen Azzi] - That's a long frigging ride... Don't the corporatists call that "free trade"?
[Mungo House Elf] - hes from china.. thats where all our $$$ is thank you Presicunt Nigbabma
[John Venckus] - Yes it's criminal, operating a illegal cab
[John Venckus] - Carries a 1000 fine
[Paris Pepoon] - Good! Maybe we can get back some of the money we send to them :)
[Ivanna Giselle] - What kind of student carries 4,000? Really? -.-

[Ocampo Miguel] - Was tip included????????
[Mary Winston] - that is a shame, someone always taking advantage of someone else.
[Jim McGonigal] - http://www.taxifarefinder.com/ Estimated Fare:
$332.00 Shame shame shame
[John Anzelone] - this is not criminal offense is it ... and who the heck takes a 3.5 hour cab ride ... that's a a 7 hr round trip for that cab driver ... .. why didn't the moron take the train
[Sheila Huff] - U reap what u sow....
[Debbie Wishnow Janicek] - I don't know if I believe the story is true. Anyone can write a handwritten receipt. Let's make America look bad, etc. If it is true, shame on them both.... The person who took advantage, and the college student for allowing it to happen. That type of transportation should have been planned before the student left China. And who carries round that much cash?
[Donna Blaskey Stover] - keep in mind the guy just came from China. HE doesn't know our ways or how to get around here. The "moron" here is the one who took advantage of in innocent person
[Rita Federman] - Oh my goodness. Terrible rip-off. :(
[Rosanne Zicca] - That's really sad!
[Eileen Tetlow Kinney] - This is a crime! I sure hope there is some way they can find this driver. What a jerk.
[Lizzy Muransky] - Yeah way to make the US look great around the world...what an idiot cab driver....
[Dominik Wieclaw] - Hahaha if the idiot paid then it's his fault hahahahahahha
[Yissy Kinner] - Catch the con person!! It's a criminal and this person deserve goes to jail. Poor student who wants to get better school and learn more from USA.
[Bernice Sanchez] - If that really happened, that's terrible - what if it was your kid going to a new country and not knowing what's normal there? But what's worse are some of the comments on here....
[Karen Klimasz Boylan] - Must have been a Chicago cabbie those out of zone fees can be a real $?@!)
[Clair N Linda Cordes] - This scenario has been played out countless times in history, and yet there are victims. Find the driver, remove his license, repay the customer, then hand them a pamphlet on "America - Lambs to the Slaughter", a how to guide on not being so gullible.
[Margaret Flavin-wilson] - Well it is a long ride
[Patti Corcoran] - he should have taken a limo!
[John Martinez] - Well, considering that China owns over a third of America now through debt and land purchases, $4000 is a drop in the bucket for them - and Wee Tu Low, anyway.
[Connor Watson] - Common sense helps
[Michael Jaye] - Are you sure it was $4000 in USD? Maybe he gave him 4000.00 Chinese Yuen which comes out to about $653. USD :D
[Danny Lovinsomechickenandwaffles Caccioppo] - I work at ohare and no way that should of happened. There are signs posted in the airlines baggage claim area that states to the passengers to not accept solicited rides from unauthorized drivers. That's why they have phones to call suburban cabs and for city area rides they have a taxi stand in each terminal.
[Pat Bartolomei] - Jeez, he could have bought a used car for that! Isn't that fare illegal? Aren't fares regulated?
[Sarah Gonzales] - I have been gouged in other countries, and the easiest thing to do is not pay it. The driver could not turn to anyone for help.
[Gladysmaria Khan] - Sad. No one deserves to be cheated that way. I know that university do send out a welcome package. He must have been confused and scared to find himself in a strange place. I hope the person who did this regrets his greed and returns the money.
[John Hennebry] - Hope he got a tip
[Dave Rudnick] - Well, gas prices DID go up since this Syria situation developed.
Seriously, there IS bus or train service between Chicago and Urbana.
Doesn't speak well for the student's research skills, does it?
[Joanna Gal] - This just makes me sick. Poor kids
[Judy Hurtte Pittenger] - Are you kidding me??
[Maggie Lackman] - As a student of the university, I have many brushes with foreign students. I think it's great that there are so many people who want to come to our country to receive a great education, and it is so unfortunate that this has to happen. The poor kid obviously did not know better!
[Carolyn Schroeder] - That is so awful and very sad!!!
[Dave Rudnick] - Maybe the cabbie took "the long, scenic route"...via Denver?
[Sonia Sizelove] - Bad, bad, bad. The guy had $4,000 to pay for the ride?
[Badral Davaadorj] - Welcome to America
[Michael De Leon] - Well we should know how shady chicago is wink wink Rod Blagojevich... we live in crook county
[Kelly Pavlik] - Thank goodness you chose the correct stock photo of UIUC.
[Steve Michalak] - Welcome to America, where we rip you off
[Héctor Hex León] - Karma is a mtf!!!
[Ralph F. Antonioli] - Welcome to Illinois!!!
[Susie Pack] - That is disgusting! I hope they find that bastard. Track the cell phone.
[Chelsey Walker] - I'm in no way justifying the cab driver's actions, but the student should have known better. I wouldn't fly to China expecting to show up at the Beijing airport and walk around until I found a bus. It is sad that people will take advantage of others like this, but it's reality. If you're smart enough to be going to college, you should be wise enough not to let this happen to you.
[Blake Humes] - That's damn right gas prices are high lol don't like it go home prolly here to go to school for free anyway
[Janis Nagler] - It was probably a city cab. They charge time & 1/2 if they leave the city limits. I work @ willowbrook and its almost $ 60 from midway and about $70 from ohare if you get into a cab that doesn't advertise flat rates to the burbs.
[Blake Humes] - Do you know where champaign is it a lot farther then the burbs still shouldn't be no 4 grand maybe they said 400 and the extra zero was a tip lol
[Syck Nation] - welcome to the USA!!! in the famous words of Juicy J! " CASH!!!!!!*
[Bill Dekoning] - Never said it was a cab!
[Jackie Di Cecco] - Gee, what a welcome.
[Dorothy Goldsmith] - This is a college student that should return home ASAP.
[Mehul Kamdar] - Welcome, welcome to Chicago,
We have a lake that's as big as a sea,
Our mayor's actually an emperor,
And a capo di tutti capi!
Welcome, welcome to Chicago!
To the domain of the mafiosi!
[Miki Lieggi Mantovano] - Let's not forget that the Chinese government pays for these kids who study in the USA...out-of-state tuition, housing, meals, per diem, travel, spending money. etc. YES, all paid for! So, let's not feel so bad, in fact, not bad at all. We should be feeling bad for our own College students forced to borrow and faced with enormous student loan debt. Does our own government assist our College students in any way? Only via government loans; loans with hefty interest rates...that's it! This Chinese student's $4,000 travel fare from O'Hare to Urbana-Champaign does not cost him a penny. #nopity

[Emily Bleibel] - this makes me so sad:(
[Jan Mullins] - That's what you call "being taken for a ride!"
[Gerald Blasinski] - Well it's about time we are getting our money back from china.
[David Buck Pikunas] - Tell him I have deals on Elevator passes!
[Dan Graiber] - I have ocean front property overlooking Lake Michigan in the far west suburbs from Chicago for sale.
[Stephen Campbell] - (( SUM TINK WONG! ))
[Danielle Williams] - That's just horrible, that kid had no idea.
[Karen Schumacher Kebleris] - What???? That is terrible!
[Llego EL Desmadre Robles] - Wow hope they get that thief thirsty mtf and hope he gets his money back poor guy... some times people r ass holes don't matter we're u cum from we're all equal.... so upsetting...
[Margo Marchetti] - Sounds like a Chicago Cabbie.
[Linda L. Mader] - Well I hope the student is identified and a fund gets set up for contributions for him. What a terrible welcome to our country, ripping him off like that. Hopefully the news media can help turn this around for him.
[Chris Heaton] - The price of citizenship these days is steepened.
[Patty Twardosz] - That's really sad
[Fefe Monroe] - I'm sorry Mat with one T. Was that your friend that I insulted? I must be smarter because who would even reach that high on the cab fare meter. Congrats on finding the one black person to insult out of 254 comments Racist Mat. Must have took a lot out of your day - dickwad.
[Melinda Obregon] - i agree @Linda L. Mader....this is horrible to hear..and i do hope this student stays encouraged and gets the money back...
[Emiliya Shevchenko] - Is this Joke? Airline ticket from China to Chicago $1200.00 and Student paid $4000???
